Dumisani Tabata
Enrolled for Articles of Clerkship in 1982. He was admitted to practice as an Attorney of the Supreme Court of South Africa in 1984 and the same year became one of the founding partners of the Firm, SMITH TABATA & VAN HEERDEN, King William’s Town. They merged with other companies including Barnes and Ross and Linde Dorrington, whereafter it changed its name to Smith Tabata Inc. Still a director of the Firm and of Smith Tabata Buchanan Boyes (“STBB”). Mr. Tabata has a keen interest in Human Rights law and Humanitarian law. In 1993 he attended the International Human Rights Course at the René Cassin Institute, Strausburg and the Human Rights Committee of the United Nations, Geneva. In 1996, Mr. Tabata was as Acting Judge of the High Court and served in the position for 3 terms. In April 1999, appointed by the Premier of the Eastern Cape, as one of the Joint Liquidators of the Transkei Agricultural Corporation (“TRACOR”). After the advent of democracy, Mr. Tabata regularly acted as attorney for Government departments, local authorities and parastatals.
