Vodacom slashes data tariffs by up to 60%

Mobile operator Vodacom on Monday cut data prices by up to 60% with a new promotion for its contract and Top Up customers when it launched the Broadband Standard MyGig 1 and MyGig 2 data contract promotion. The promotion runs from February 7 to May 6 and with its latest promotion, Vodacom had broken the R100 price barrier on big data bundles, resulting in customers now paying R99 for 1 GB.

Most urban South Africans confident about the safety of tap water

Most South Africans living in urban areas believe that their tap water is safe to drink, a study commissioned by the Water Research Commission (WRC) and the South African Local Government Association (Salga) has found. The study, which investigated urban South Africans' perceptions of their water quality and the factors that influence perceptions, drew a random sample of 2 437 urban households.

Jasco says Spescom integration, restructuring starting to bear fruit

The benefits of JSE-listed Jasco’s successful integration with information and communication technology firm Spescom, its restructuring and the improved contribution from the group’s investment in cable manufacturer M-Tec have started to flow through, CEO Pete da Silva said Monday. The company reported 75% profit growth in the six months ended December 31, rising to R11.88-million, from R6.79-million a year earlier.

IDC report highlights jobs potential of SA mining

A supportive operational environment together with a turnaround in South Africa’s mineral extraction rates could stimulate the creation of an additional 140 000 direct mining jobs by 2020 and over 200 000 by 2030, the State-owned Industrial Development Corporation said in a report published on Monday. IFC partners with ABC Holdings to support SMEs

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) on Monday launched an advisory services programme to complement a $13.5-million investment in three banks under Botswana-listed ABC Holdings. The Africa Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (AMSME) programme, along with the investment, would help banks increase their lending, as well as develop tailored financial products for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Botswana, Mozambique and Zambia.

Air Liquide to build R400m SA plant after securing Evraz Highveld deal

Industrial gases group Air Liquide reported on Monday that it would invest some R400-million in a new 770 t/d air separation unit (ASU) in South Africa after concluding a 20-year oxygen supply contract with JSE-listed steel and vanadium producer Evraz Highveld. Evraz Highveld signed the deal after terminating a supply agreement with JSE-listed industrial gases and welding products supplier Afrox, following earlier gas supply disruptions that had affect production at the Emalahleni steel plant.
